What to expect from your first therapy session

A Conversation, Not a Test

Your first session will mostly take the form of a question-and-answer conversation. Think of it as your provider getting to know you — your story, your needs, and your goals for therapy. This is also your chance to get to know your provider and ask any questions you may have about the process.

Sensitive Questions May Be Asked

To understand how best to support you, your provider may ask sensitive or personal questions. These might include questions about your medical history, past experiences, relationships, current challenges, and overall well-being. Some of these will also be safety-related questions (such as whether you’ve experienced thoughts of self-harm), which are important for ensuring your care is safe and appropriate. While these questions may feel difficult to answer, they help your provider gain a complete picture of your needs and determine the best way to move forward with treatment.

The information you share helps your provider:

  • Identify your unique goals and needs.
  • Develop a personalized treatment plan.
  • Ensure your care is safe, appropriate, and effective.

Important to Know About Paperwork and Evaluations

Providers are unable to complete disability-related paperwork or evaluations during your first session. The initial appointment is focused on understanding your history, current needs, and goals. If disability paperwork becomes part of your care needs, you and your provider can discuss the appropriate next steps once a therapeutic relationship has been established. Please note that providers will carefully consider these requests, but completion of paperwork is not guaranteed and is based on their clinical judgment.
