In this article, we will walk you through the steps of transferring your minor's care to themselves when they turn 18. Once minors graduate into adults at the age of 18, they will be responsible for managing their own care in the Rula patient portal.
Below, you will find the steps to transfer your graduating minors' Rula patient portal account to themselves. The directions depend on whether you and your minor currently have a shared email or separate emails for logging into the Rula patient portal to manage their care.
Shared Email Guided Steps
- You will receive an email from Rula seven days before your minor turns 18, warning you that you will soon lose access to your minor's account.
- Log into the Rula patient portal.
- Next to your minor's account profile, you will see that your access is expiring soon. Hover over the red "Expiring" warning.
- Click Submit email to add an email address for your minor. Once they turn 18, the minor will use this email address to manage their own care.
- Once you submit a new email, your job is done and the transfer process has begun!
- On your minor's 18th birthday, they will receive an email to set up their Rula patient portal. They will click Sign in to patient portal.
- A new screen will open asking them to verify their date of birth. Once entered, they will select Verify.
- They will now be able to manage their own care through their Rula patient portal account.
Separate Email Guided Steps
- You will receive an email from Rula seven days before your minor turns 18, warning you that you will soon lose access to your minor's account.
- Once you receive this email, no action is needed because you and your minor already have separate emails associated with your Rula patient portal accounts.

- Please ensure that the email associated with each account is managed by the patient themselves.

- On your minor's 18th birthday, they will receive an email to set up their Rula patient portal. They will click Sign in to patient portal.
- A new screen will open asking them to verify their date of birth. Once entered, they will select Verify.
- They will now be able to manage their own care through their Rula patient portal account.
Please note that as the parent/guardian of a newly graduated minor, you will no longer have access to their Rula patient portal account. It will show that your access has expired.
Medical Guardianship
If you have medical guardianship over your minor and will continue to manage their care after they turn 18, please follow the steps below.
- You will receive an email from Rula seven days before your minor turns 18, warning you that you will soon lose access to your minor's account.
- Log into the Rula patient portal.
- Next to your minor's account profile, you will see that your access is expiring soon. Hover over the red "Expiring" warning.
- Click Submit email.
- This will bring you to a screen to add a new email address for your minor, however, you will select Click here for medical guardianship under the green Submit button.
- On the next page, you will need to confirm that you are the medical guardian for your minor. Click Confirm.
- Finally, you will be brought to a screen asking you to send your court order to records@rula.com.
- You can now continue managing your minor's care even after they turn 18.
