Psychiatry referrals for Kaiser patients

Kaiser requires their clients to be referred back to them for psychiatry services by their therapist*. 

  • *Kaiser San Bernardino County patients may be referred to Rula for psychiatry.

This article guides you through what your Kaiser referral covers, and the process from completing your referral to get your psychiatry services covered.

What does my Kaiser referral cover?

Your Kaiser referral covers:

❑  Therapy sessions (60 minutes) –  CPT Code: 90837

❑  Initial mental health evaluation (without medication) – CPT Code: 90791

⚠️ Your referral does NOT cover:

  • Medication evaluations
  • Psychiatric evaluations that involve medical services

Completing your referral 

To get your psychiatry services covered by Kaiser, the following must take place to complete your referral:

  1. Meet with a therapist through an initial therapy session.
  2. Request a psychiatry referral during your session.
    • You are not obligated to have continuous sessions with your therapist.
  3. Your therapist will submit the referral through Rula’s internal process. You'll be asked to confirm with our Care Coordination team about proceeding with the referral.
  4. Once processed, Kaiser will reach out to you to schedule your psychiatry appointment.
