A session summary is a short recap of your therapy session. Your therapist may share one with you to help you remember what you talked about and to keep the momentum going between appointments. Think of it as a friendly note from your therapist that you can look back on any time.
Each summary has two parts:
- A look back at the key topics and things you learned from your session.
- A look ahead at what to carry forward from your session and the helpful exercises or articles you might try in the time before your next appointment.
Written to be easy to read — and safe
Summaries are meant to be quick and clear. They're kept short and use everyday language instead of clinical jargon so they always make sense.
To protect your privacy, sensitive topics are described in general terms rather than spelled out in detail. This is intentional: it keeps your summary safe to have on your device without exposing private specifics.
How you'll be notified
When your therapist shares a summary, you'll get a heads-up by email and a push notification on your phone if you have notifications turned on.
A few additional things to know about summary notifications:
- Notifications only mention that a summary is ready — they never include any of your private information.
- You'll only be notified between 9am and 5pm your local time. If your therapist approves a summary outside those hours, you'll hear about it at 9am the next day.
- If you don't open your summary, you'll get one gentle reminder the following day between 4pm and 7pm.
Finding and revisiting your summaries
You can view your summaries in the Rula patient portal, and in the mobile app. You can also look back at past summaries any time — handy for remembering earlier tasks or meaningful moments in your therapy.
To find them in the app, simply click into the Sessions tab at the bottom of the screen. Then click "Past" to look at your past sessions. If there is a summary available for that session, one will be linked.
When you might not get a summary
Summaries aren't created for every session. You'll receive one when:
- You're an adult (18 or older) in an individual therapy session, and
- Your therapist shares a summary for that session.
- Please note that your therapist can choose whether to send a session summary or not. You may not receive a summary after every session.
Psychiatry sessions as well as therapy sessions for couples and families are currently not supported for session summaries in the Rula mobile app.
