What does my Kaiser psychiatry referral cover?

Your referral covers therapy sessions (60 minutes, CPT Code: 90837) and initial mental health evaluations without medication (CPT Code: 90791). It does not cover medication evaluations or psychiatric evaluations that involve medical services.

If you are already seeing a Rula therapist and need a psychiatry referral, here is how the process works: First, meet with your therapist for an initial therapy session. Then, request a psychiatry referral during your session — you are not obligated to continue sessions with your therapist afterward. Your therapist will submit the referral through Rula's internal process, and our Care Coordination team will confirm you wish to proceed. Once processed, Kaiser will reach out to you to schedule your psychiatry appointment.

How do I get started? Call Kaiser at 1-833-579-4848 and ask to be booked at Rula. If Kaiser already scheduled you, you can call Rula at (213) 583-1216 for any other assistance.

Do I need a referral for therapy? Yes. A referral from Kaiser is required before you can begin therapy at Rula. Kaiser NCAL referrals are typically valid for 6 months of care. What if my Rula therapist recommends additional services?

If your Rula therapist recommends additional services — such as an evaluation for psychiatric medication management, a higher level of care, or group therapy — you will receive an email from Rula confirming the recommendation. To follow up, contact your local Kaiser Permanente Mental Health Clinic and say: "My external Rula therapist has recommended that I be evaluated for [specific service]." Kaiser will manage the evaluation and scheduling process — no additional paperwork from Rula is needed. You can continue your Rula therapy as normal while pursuing these additional services.

How do I get started? Most Kaiser NCAL patients are referred directly by Kaiser. After your referral is processed, you'll receive an email from Rula with the subject line "Reminder: get started with Rula" — use that email to register and book your first appointment.

If you believe you have a referral but haven't received this email, it may take up to 2 business days to process. If you still need help or haven't yet received a referral, contact Kaiser NCAL member services. Because Kaiser NCAL phone numbers vary by county, call 1-888-937-5748 for general assistance.
